Societally-accepted standards of things are not always the right way of doing things; they’re the ways society deems a thing to be. Some things society demonizes should be normalized.
Seeking Therapy or Mental Health
Society makes seeking mental health help a form of weakness. Even in its openness to mental health, people who seek mental health are victimized and in some cases, are not allowed to work freely like other people. There’s also the case of society equating help with madness. When people see a psychiatrist, many believe they’re mentally unstable, and in such cases, unfit to be loved, employed, and considered human enough.
Expressing Emotions as a Man
The ‘traditional’ way of viewing men expects that men should always have their emotions intact, no matter the emotional extremes happening to them. Men are expected to show less emotions, have things together, and never cry, at least not in public.
Taking Breaks From Work to Care For Your Mental Health
Most industries aren’t aware of the need for breaks to deal with one’s mental health. Many times, sick leaves are only for physical health. Society deems that person who wants a break from work to deal with their mental health as weak, and often call them unserious and irresponsible.
Being Single and Content
Although the societal pressure on being married differs based on a society’s culture, most societies put pressure on single people to get married. The belief that one can’t be single and content makes a single person demonized as either lacking in focus or an unserious person.
Choosing Not to Have Children
It does not matter the society, children are compulsory for married couples. When a couple then decides they don’t want children, it’s demonized and their choice is not respected. Some people believe every married couple must want children, and if they don’t, they’re tagged as selfish and disgraceful.
Asking For Help
We can’t always figure things out. But society often demonizes people who ask for help, whether it’s financial, emotional, or physical. Society makes asking for help a sign of weakness, one every person should abhor.
Having Different Opinions Without Conflict
Although many societies claim to be open, diverse, and welcoming of differences, many don’t respect opinions that don’t align with theirs. Different opinions are demonized, and in some cases, the people who hold these opinions are treated harshly. Societally-accepted truth doesn’t always have to be accepted as truth.
Embracing Failures
As much as many people claim they understand the importance of failures, most societies don’t handle people who have failed well. They either mock or abandon them to the anals of forgotten histories. Society makes it seem as though only successful people deserve to be loved and celebrated.
Embrace Diverse Family Structures
There is some form of binary thinking about how family structures should be societal. When these structures aren’t adhered to, society often frowns and demonizes the people who explore different structures. Yes, it’ll be hard for society to fully embrace diverse structures, it’s unfair that those who go outside that norm are seen as less.
Accepting Different Body Types
The body positivity movement has helped push the narrative that beauty comes in different body shapes. But there’s also the need not to overglamourize different body sizes and demonize good physical health in the process. Beauty is not binary, it can be any size.
Celebrating Introversion as Much as They Celebrate Extroversion
Introverts are seen as socially awkward, and people who need to change and be more extroverted. Introverted people being encouraged to be more extroverted is seen as right, but society needs to understand that introversion is beautiful and should also be celebrated.
Accommodating Diverse Abilities and Disabilities
Society hasn’t come to terms with the fact that some abilities and disabilities deserve appreciation and not condemnation. Everybody wouldn’t and shouldn’t look the same. Appreciating diversity in ability allows for more progress in society.
People Don’t Have to Be Very Ambitious
Society has found a way to sell us a truck of lies that we all must be very ambitious and go for big dreams. Society makes it feel as though people who don’t have big dreams don’t have a right to be loved and appreciated as those who do.
Being Unhappy Sometimes
Society believes that people should be happy at all times. And when people express any form of unhappiness, it is perceived as being bad. People have a right to feel what they feel and express them without being looked down on.
Everyone Must Not Go to School
The world is evolving, therefore, education should not be limited to being in a classroom. Learning institutions are great, but they aren’t the only way for one to be educated. Society needs to stop demonizing people who choose not to attend traditional schools.
Boundaries Should Be Respected in Relationships
Society has made it acceptable that people no longer accept boundaries between two people who are dating. There is the fast demonization of boundaries because it is believed that when boundaries exist, it does not help a healthy relationship,
Supporting Unconventional Career Path
Certain career paths have been labeled as the ‘surest way to success’. While these parts have proven effective in leading to success, people should be given the freedom to choose whatever path they deem healthy for them at the time. Career paths that don’t conform with society’s belief of a ‘successful career’ should be allowed to thrive. People should be able to do what they’re passionate about.
Success Equals Financial Growth
In a capitalist world, being successful is often only associated with being rich. When people define their success as something other than financial, they are often frowned at.
Aging is Beautiful
Although people claim they’re more accommodating of people, being old is becoming undesirable. With different beauty creams and products designed to make people look younger, being old is frowned upon. And should a person openly express their love for old people or aging, they are seen as strange. Being old should not demonized but celebrated.
