The 16 Unbelievable Movie Disasters of 1976

Alex Brown

Have you thought about what cinematic disasters plagued 1976? Well, you’re in for a wild ride as we dive into the glorious mess that was 1976’s worst movies. Grab some popcorn, and let’s relive these epic film blunders.

1. The Great Scout & Cathouse Thursday

Is this a Western, comedy, or adventure? With such a disjointed storyline it’s hard to tell. When it does have its comedic moments, it simply falls flat. Such a waste of the amazing talent of Lee Marvin, Oliver Reed, and Robert Culp.

2. The Blue Bird

A fantasy film aimed at kids. Yet, the sets fail to capture the wonder, magic, and mystery of a fantasy realm. The child actors have no emotion so you don’t connect with them. Add to that the preachiness of the moral issues this movie keeps hammering and you have a movie from 1976 you want to avoid.

3. The Boy in the Plastic Bubble

Based on a true story about a boy with a compromised immune system, this movie fails to capture the trauma and emotion behind the experience. John Travolta doesn’t invoke any feelings of empathy from the audience. Combine that with an overly melodramatic script. The result is a crappy film.

4. New Fist of Fury

Martial arts movies are awesome if done right. “New First of Fury” misses the mark in many areas. Jackie Chan fails to live up the the awesomeness of Bruce Lee’s performance in the original “Fist of Fury”. The plot is confusing because there are too many subplots that don’t add to the overall story. Finally, the fight scenes are painfully bad to watch. You’ll be wanting to raise your Fist of Fury at the TV when watching this.

5. Sisters of Death

A horror film about a group of sorority sisters who have a reunion at a mansion. Sounds good, but the movie is full of cliches and copies from other horror movies. Stilted dialogue makes you want to teach these people how to speak properly. You are left waiting for long periods for something to happen and when it does it is so predictable. A snooze-fest of a film.

6. Gus

A donkey that becomes a placekicker for an American football team? Straight away you know not to watch this just on that storyline. The comedy is slapstick and predictable which may appeal to toddlers and young kids, but is a complete miss as a family-oriented movie.

7. Won Ton Ton: The Dog Who Saved Hollywood

A dog becomes a major star in Hollywood. Hey, that sounds like a great idea for a film. Here’s news for you: It’s not!! The comedic elements feel like they are stitched together from uninspired sketches that don’t gel together. Even the cast, featuring stars such as Bruce Dern and Madeline Kahn, can’t rescue this piece of trash.

8. Fighting Mad

This is a film about a guy taking on corrupt land developers. There is potential behind that narrative, yet the script relies on being formulaic which is one of the major downfalls of “Fighting Mad”. You want to side with the protagonist, but his acting is shallow and unemotional so you don’t care about what happens to him. Long periods of non-action in the movie have you wondering if this is truly an action film.

9. Vigilante Force

The title alone has you excited about this movie. Don’t get too carried away. Yes, it’s about vigilantes, but the movie doesn’t bring anything fresh to the story. The actors don’t have any energy or real onscreen presence and the fight scenes are bad. This is a force you don’t want to waste time with.

10. The Amazing Dobermans

Dobermans! So big! So awesome! So…boring. Well, at least in this travesty of a movie. The plot, based around Dobermans and their owner executing a heist, strains credibility. When it comes to humor, this film relies on tired gags which have a bit of a yawn factor. As for the acting, well the dogs are good but the humans aren’t.

11. Sherlock Holmes in New York

Photo Credit: 20th Century Fox Television.

Roger Moore as Sherlock Holmes? That sounds intriguing. Yet, that’s where the intrigue finishes in this clunker of a TV movie. Roger completely fails to bring the nuances and essence of Sherlock. The plot comes across as contrived and lacks mystery and the deductive elements that we all associate with one of the greatest detectives of all time. Mix all that with a supporting cast that doesn’t add much support at all and you have a pretty awful movie.

12. From Noon Till Three

From noon till three. That’s three hours and it might feel that long when you watch this disaster. Is this a comedy or a Western? Something that is never made clear. There is also a romantic element, yet the chemistry between the main characters lacks that. The film also jumps between different periods, leaving you confused as to what is happening.

13. The Last Tycoon

This has Robert De Niro! Yet even he couldn’t rescue this piece of junk. The script is awful and so is the direction. The movie meanders along and so does the pacing so that you are left getting bored and irritated. Not the kind of emotions this movie was meant to create.

14. Eat My Dust!

You might be covering yourself in dust as you lament the fact you sat down to watch this film. A guy steals a car to win over a girl and then gets into a police chase. A simplistic theme with characters that aren’t developed. The supporting cast gives forgettable performances. If you enjoy car chases, this may be a movie worth checking out but don’t expect it to deliver the goods.

15. Obsession

With Brian De Palms at the helm, this film should have shined. Yet, it was a disappointment. A lot of viewers see it as a rip-off of Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo”. So it’s not an original movie. There is no onscreen spark between Cliff Robertson and Geneviève Bujold, so it fails as a romance or thriller. The suspense is limited and Palma struggles to keep it even throughout the 1 hour and 38 minutes.

16. A Star Is Born

This is a movie that has been remade four times. The 1976 version should have been left alone. Barbara Streisand and Kris Kristofferson don’t have an in-depth onscreen romance. The music doesn’t capture the emotional resonance of the original version. When it comes to the storytelling, it’s sluggish and uneven. Overall it’s a failed attempt to try to revive a classic.
