It’s amazing how myths spread and become so popular that they are generally accepted as the norm in societies when, in fact, some of these myths are absolutely unfounded. Here are twelve of the stupidest societal myths that are still spreading like wildfire:
The Earth Is Flat
It was a common misconception in the early years that the earth was flat. However, thanks to countless research and scientific explorations, it’s now known that the Earth is actually spherical in shape.
Interestingly, some people still don’t believe that the earth is spherical. Instead, they are sticking to their guns that the world is flat and everything else is just one big propaganda to hide the truth. Baffling!
People Only Use 10% Of Their Brains
Chances are you’ve already heard different people say this multiple times. In fact, it’s even possible you’ve told others the same thing. However, it isn’t true.
The brain might not be 100% active every single time, but in reality, you do use your brain’s maximum capacity. That said, it’s not like every part is active simultaneously. Different parts of the brain handle different responsibilities.
Color Red Makes a Bull Angry
Have you ever watched Spanish Matadors in action? If you have, it’s easy to believe that it’s the red cloth being waved in front of the bulls that makes them angry. However, that isn’t the case at all.
It’s actually the movement of the muleta that gets the bull angry and moving in the first place. Bulls are colorblind to red.
Eating Carrot Improves Your Vision
Eat carrots to improve your eyesight— is a common thing that parents especially tell their kids. Because of this, many people erroneously believe that there’s a unique link between eating carrots and having good eyesight.
Here’s the thing: Carrots actually contain Vitamin A, which is good for eyesight. However, consuming lots of carrots doesn’t translate to remarkably sharp vision.
You’ll Sink If You Swim Immediately After Eating
This is one crazy myth that has spread massively among swimmers and swimming enthusiasts. Some people believe that if you swim immediately after eating, you’ll be unable to keep yourself afloat when swimming.
Because of this, they counsel people to wait for some minutes or hours after eating before swimming. In reality, you can actually swim immediately after eating. It may not be ideal, but it’s certainly not a drowning hazard.
5G Causes COVID-19
The introduction of 5G and the outbreak of COVID-19 coincided eerily. This made a lot of people to develop the theory that 5G is actually the cause of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this is totally untrue because COVID-19 is caused by a virus, not by technology. Still, many people refuse to believe this. Think about it… if 5G really was behind COVID-19, wouldn’t simply deactivating it have prevented lots of deaths?
Shaving Your Hair Makes It Grow Back Thicker
This particular ridiculous myth is more common among guys than ladies. Many guys believe that when they shave their beards, they grow back thicker than they used to be. This particular misconception is likely because when hair growth is still in its early stages, the stubble makes it look thicker than it is. However, once it grows beyond this stage, you’ll find that it’s still the same thinness… that’s right, nothing changed!
Bats Are Totally Blind
“As blind as a bat.” Everyone has either heard this phrase or used it at least once before. However, what if we were to tell you that blinds aren’t actually blind?
Bats have very sensitive and small eyes that allow them to see clearly in dark conditions. Their vision might not be as sharp as humans’, but they are far from being blind.
Lightning Never Strikes The Same Place Twice
Most people think that lightning never strikes the same place twice. If you believe this, then it’s pretty evident that you really don’t know enough about the Empire State Building.
Research shows that this particular building is hit at least 20 times in one year alone. Buildings don’t move, do they? So yes, lighting can and does commonly strike the same place multiple times.
Wet Hair Will Make You Catch a Cold
It’s also a common belief that when people go out into the cold with wet hair or don’t towel off their hair immediately after a shower that, they’ll catch a cold. This is actually in no way true. The common cold is caused by contact with a virus, not by cold or wet conditions. As long as you’re not exposed to someone with the disease, your damp hair won’t make you catch a cold.
Microwave Ovens Cause Cancer
This particular misconception seems to have died down a bit, but it’s still quite common. Microwaves operate using radiation, and radiation is commonly linked to cancer. So people believe using one or standing too close to a microwave can cause cancer.
Microwaves Do Not cause cancer! They use non-ionizing radiation to work. This type of radiation is mostly safe, and there has been no definite link to it causing cancer.
Hair and Nails Don’t Stop Growing After Death
It’s also common to hear people claim that hair and nails continue growing long after death. The truth? This is false. After death, the skin dries up and recedes, uncovering hair and nails previously buried beneath. This is what gives people the impression that hair and nails are still growing post-mortem.
