Jenny Black

There is no other way to put it other than to call out some out-of-fashion baby boomer habits we can’t let slide. It has been established that the baby boomer generation makes up the more significant chunk of the United States population. Baby boomers domineering numbers and habits have led to profound consequences for the country. This present-day millennial generation has, over the years, voiced out on these boomer habits and has shown their distasteful tendencies towards them. We know you are anxious to know these boomers’ habits the millennials can’t let slide. Don’t worry; we have unleashed them as follows.

Rigidity and Resistance to Change

There is no doubt that boomers are eternally resistant to change. This fact has inundated many people, but the closest answer to this puzzling habit can be traced to the time they were brought up. Boomers grew up when the world witnessed some stability in all strata. The general belief in those times was that if you work and persevere, you will surely stumble into success one way or the other. This is a fixed game state and a sequence of give and take. This type of reality has stereotyped the baby boomers to inculcate the habit of rigidity in all areas of their lives, ranging from social discourse to technology. Millennials have seen the underside of this rigid habit and how it stifles creativity and development. It is essential to encourage baby boomers to open their hearts to new possibilities and ways of doing things.

Individualism and Self-promotion

Boomers are viewed as loners. They always have the ambition of doing things independently and frown at any idea of collaboration. Individualism is another boomer habit we can’t let slide because this is a new generation with a completely different way of life. Although individualism and self-promotion might have been a cancer in this era loo, based on how the previous generation was built up, we should cut them some slack. Boomers always point to how they used their ideas to create success and achieve their goals. But the fact remains that individualism and self-promotion often lead to a lack of cooperation and selfishness. It is essential to find the balance between this boomer’s habit of self-righteousness and collectivism. There’s no sin in pursuing one’s goal, but working together should be a bitter pill.

Lack of Awareness of Privilege

Being born in the era of the United States’ economic prosperity has made most boomers oblivious to the privilege they had during that time. Fast forward to this era of economic downturn where the millennials are bungled with inflation, housing costs, and student loan debts; most boomers have developed the I don’t care attitude to this plight. It’s sickening, to say the least when boomers who benefitted from social security and Medicare failed to provide adequate support to the younger generation that is yearning for their racial and gender privilege. It is essential to create an enabling environment where everyone can flourish. Baby boomers have a role to play in this. Millennials should start by sensitizing millennials to be more educated about their privilege and ask for them.

Micromanagement

This might be fun to the boomers, but it’s a brand-frustrating habit. It’s demoralizing to work with someone with the habit of controlling every aspect of the work and that of their subordinates. This boomer habit is one wonder of the universe millennials can’t seem to wrap their heads around. The logic behind this boomer habit still can’t be understood because micromanagement stifles creativity and innovation. There is one thousand and one reason to put this among the boomer’s habit we can’t let slide. Therefore, millennials must teach boomers the need for delegation of authority and let subordinates do their jobs effectively without breathing down their necks.

Toxic Positivity

No one seems to get the win behind toxic positivity. Regardless of how rotten the situation looks, boomers have the innate habit of always looking at the bright side. We see it in this current state of the governance in the Joe Biden administration. This is a discouraging habit that stops people from speaking up against problems. This boomer habit has been found to result in more profound and avoidable issues like depression and burnout. However, the onus is on the millennials to show the baby boomers the importance of venting their anger. It showcases that negative emotions are another means to reduce the toxin and depressive tendencies in their body.

Lack of Understanding of Technology

This is one of the most common boomer habits we all get to witness every day. Understandably, the boomers grew up in an era where tech was not a thing. But how do we explain their lack of effort in learning and adopting new technologies in this era? The only answer millennials could come up with was that boomers see technology as a threat to their existence. It is funny and not funny because boomers’ lack of understanding of technology often leads to societal problems, such as difficulty finding and using information, slow execution of simple tasks, and overreliance on humans for help.

Dismissive of Younger Generations

You are in for a long, strenuous process trying to hear your opinion among the baby boomers. It’s appalling when you are being shut out regardless of how valuable and insightful your idea is because you belong to the millennial generation. This is the perfect picture of the dismissive habits of the baby boomers. We all agree that they make up the majority of those in the United States workforce, and they are used to having the final say. But tbjs alone doesn’t work in this new opinionated world where endless ideas are everywhere. Canceling millennia’s opinions on social and economic issues is another boomer habit we can not let slide.

Over-reliance on Hierarchy

You can’t jump ahead of your superior; it has to be one of the most frustrating boomer habits we can’t let slide. This habit disregards brilliance because regardless of how you work, you must not outshine your superior. Boomers were raised to respect their superiors and never outclass them, no matter what. This habit stifles innovation and creativity, leading to frustration and resentment. It’s essential to sensitize boomers to create an inclusive environment where everyone can share ideas and have their thoughts heard.

Lack of Work Life Balance

Making sacrifices for your career is not a problem, but working extra hours without considering your social life is a problem. Boomers believe that consistent hard work and long hours are the only way to be successful. This habit has led to a series of mental and health-related problems. Boomers must escape this trap and devise a strategy to trust the temptation to work. They can start by reading some work-life balance workbooks and learn the art of self-consciousness.

Resistance to New Ideas

Resistance to new ideas is another painstaking boomer habit we can’t let slide. How do millennials cope with boomers who resist new ideas regardless of how brilliant they seem? One of such is using artificial intelligence for human existence or a new way of executing tasks. Getting your ideas trashed can be a demoralizing experience for millennials. Therefore, millennials must reinforce the importance of embracing change in their lives.

Lack of Diversity and Inclusion

The importance of diversity and inclusion in all areas of life can not be overstated in this generation. It’s infuriating to imagine how boomers have the habit of not respecting this culture. It’s OK to be brought up in an era when diversity and inclusion were not expected. But you have to purge those ideas and move away from it. Boomers have this habit of not being aware of their biases. This has led them to ignore the realities of women and minorities in the United States.

Entitlement

An unbridled sense of entitlement is the last part of the boomer habit we can’t let slide. You may have been in a situation where boomers in your workplace think they should be ahead of you because your age longs to millennials, who are from the boomer generation. This makes one of the ways they showcase their entitlement to privilege and benefits they do not even have the slightest bit of qualifications to lay claim to. That’s why we, as millennials, need to remind boomers of the importance of fairness in all matters.
