Sometimes, people go to extreme lengths to save money, thereby crossing and blurring lines of ethics and resorting to some actions that border on illegality. Below are some unethical ways people save money:
Stealing From Their Workplace/Office
There is usually provision for employees in standard working conditions. However, people sometimes take advantage of their workplaces by stealing snacks and office supplies. While the occasional pocketing of biscuits and fruits may not seem like much, taking home toilet paper from the office to save costs is overboard.
Crashing A Funeral For Food
Even down to sad events such as funerals, people do the most to save money. They show up uninvited but dressed according to the occasion and even solemn and sober for the funeral of someone they don’t know. Then, they catch rides to the reception, eat free meals, and collect souvenirs, which is an unethical way to save money.
Shoplifting
Though some try to justify their actions by stealing only necessities like food and toilet paper from grocery stores, it doesn’t change how unethical and illegal even this action is. Shoplifting is the lowest of lows on questionable, unethical things one can do to save money.
Skipping Payments
Another questionable thing people do to save money is to skip payments. They intentionally miss out on expenses such as rent, giving excuses and forcing their landlords to evict them so they can move in with their friends later on to save money. They usually also avoid paying for their mail delivery and mailboxes.
Scamming
People forget the legal consequences and outright scam people or companies to save money. Sometimes, they order products from companies and send back broken or older items to get a refund, leaving them with a new product they technically did not pay for. Going to such lengths to avoid paying for goods or services is another unethical way people save money.
Abusing Return Policies
Usually, people try to save money in an unethical manner by taking advantage of return policies. They would purchase items, use them, and then return them the next day or within the permitted time frame of the return policy with dishonest excuses or made-up circumstances to get a refund. They sometimes also lie that the item has a defect.
Abusing Discounts
Like return policies, people take advantage of store discounts to save money. They would try to cash in on discounts available to students, military personnel, and senior citizens using their old student identification cards or a friend’s military identification card. They also select categories on forms or automated kiosks that enable them to get discounted prices or lie about their place of employment.
Exploiting Others
Another unethical method people resort to to save money is exploiting others. Not minding their reputations, people pretend to be short on cash to get free food, drinks, and items.
Also, they could lie about their tickets being fake to ticket companies to get a refund after attending such events or concerts, resulting in a chargeback.
Taking Advantage Of Loopholes
Finding loopholes to save costs is quite clever, albeit unethical; people search far and wide for loopholes and take advantage of those. For instance, they could use different email addresses to sign up for free trials on streaming platforms to get out of actually paying for any subscription. They could also use other names to complete a survey that offered free food or items in their promotional events to get as many packages as possible.
Faking Relationships/ Marriage
Nowadays, people claim to be couples or pretend to be in romantic relationships with their best friends or strangers to save money. They lie about their relationship status with other people to participate in events where they’re likely to win free meal tickets, coupons, and gift packs or pretend to be a couple to save on gym membership fees. Faking a relationship or marriage is a questionable way to save money.
Faking Their Sexuality
Can you imagine someone faking their sexuality to save costs on items and services such as gym subscriptions? Well, lying about their sexual identity is another unethical thing people do to save money.
Cheating The System
To save money, people play smart, and one unethical way they do this is by ‘cheating the system.’ If you’ve ever used your friend’s Netflix account instead of paying for your subscription, you’re guilty of this. Some people also park in spots for people living with disabilities to get out of paying parking fees.
Misleading Applications
From putting down false information about their health and medical history to get cheaper life insurance to lying about their income on new credit card applications to get approved for higher credit limits, this is a very common way unethical people try to save money. While turning in a misleading application might help you make some financial gain, it would likely not serve you well in the long run.
Taking Advantage Of Their Offices/Workplaces
Aside from stealing stuff from the office, people take advantage of their workplaces by lying about their work hours- putting down overtime they did not cover, pretending to be sick for paid leaves, and feigning interest in conferences abroad to earn a paid work vacation to save money.
Pretending To Be Homeless
Though unethical, acting like they’re homeless is another way people save money. They get access to free food, drinks, blankets, shelter, and other resources while pretending to be homeless and save up on expenses as low as paying for a mailbox at the same time.
