The Commitment Conundrum: 13 Reasons Why Men Shy Away from Tying the Knot

Sarah White

Over the years, a series of issues and factors ranging from personal and social issues have resulted in men changing attitudes towards commitment. This has led to a commitment conundrum that entails men taking their time before tying the knot or not even trying at all. What are the reasons and why has it become this bad? Let’s find out.

Cultural Differences

Men with not-so-diverse cultural orientations might have issues marrying someone from different ethnic groups and backgrounds. For instance, a Hispanic/Latino man may have reservations about marrying an American Indian woman. This often comes to be due to their different ideologies and beliefs that might end up becoming a source of conflict.

Financial Concerns

Tying the knot is exciting but can also cost a fortune. This is a scary prospect if you look at the average cost of a wedding. According to Bankrate, the average cost of a wedding in the United States, together with the reception and ceremony, is $30,000. Not every man is ready to pay this price or even have the capacity to bear the cost.

Loss of Independence

As part of the sacred vow, when a man gets married, he’s going to delegate part of his life to his spouse by sharing all his dealings and responsibilities. This art is equivalent to loss of independence and can be a scary prospect for a man who has been the sole driver of his life right from adulthood.

Relationship Trauma

Breakup and other relationship problems most times result in personal trauma for a man. Not everyone can understand this concept, but in reality, they also grieve after a breakup. A man with such experience might not find it worthy of going into an eternal commitment with another woman, bearing in mind all his past failures and trauma.

Family Pressure

Almost everyone knows that marriage publicity comes from societal and family expectations. This has often led to gluts of failed marriage because it was encouraged solely by what my neighbour and the entire society say, not about if the couples want it or their compatibility. Most men have realized these loopholes and shy away from such commitment.

Personal Goals

Not every man prioritizes marriage that much. Some men have become accustomed to setting and achieving their goals that they have become so much in love with self-discovery and personal development. Such a man may resist any advances of tying the knot since they classify marriage as a distraction regardless of what you say or how you put it to them.

Divorce Settlement

On this note, no one can blame the men who shy away from tying the knot. There have been a series of instances where women game the system by using a contentious and costly divorce process to take men’s assets. This has become a worrying trend that most men dread could become their end if they tie the knot.

Lack of Suitable Partner

It’s scary to even think of the low-quality partners out there. Most women have become an unmarriageable person due to their unbridled arrogance and zero family values. Men have found it hard to have a satisfactory pick among women of this generation, making it look like they would rather remain single than go for scraps.

Trust Issues

Marriage is a commitment that you are trusting your future, life, emotions, and well-being to another person. These are personal human build-ups that a misdemeanour could ruin forever. Men are not scared of entrusting themselves to those they love, but the fear of deceit and betrayal has made it hard to do so, causing trust issues.

Career Focus

There has been a mass sensitization about work-life balance. Well, not everyone would commit to such an instance of tuning down their work life for marriage. It’s practical that marriage demands time, attention, and energy. Most men are not ready to put up with such hindrances together with their professional lives, thereby pulling the plug on anything called marriage, let alone commitment.

Fear of Commitment

I’ll always put it to people that men are an unstable species. It’s biological if you look at how men were built up to live, earn sustenance and care for other genders. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not being misogynistic, but the fact remains that men take much more responsibility in every state of society. Coming back to the idea of commitment, no man wants to say things he can’t fulfil as quickly as possible. This is evident in the reasons why some shy away from making lifelong commitments to a woman because they see it as losing their freedom and getting gagged to one person forever.

Marriage Stereotype

The general PR surrounding marriage is a concern because of its inclination towards the traditional status quo. For instance, how do you expect a non-conventional man to abide by the gender roles and the husband-and-wife marriage system that everyone conforms to? This thought can be a deterrent for men who are aversed to this type of belief.
