That Awkward Moment: Men Share When They Knew Their Relationship Was Over

The following responses were curated from an online forum where men shared their “darn it, this relationship is over” moments.

Lack of Respect

“I genuinely realized that my marriage was going to fail while having breakfast with a friend. My friend was complimenting his wife and made a statement to the effect of “She always has my back.” I then realized that my wife treated me in the opposite way. I was treated with contempt, disrespect, and apathy. We didn’t officially part ways for a few years, but that morning the course was already set.”

No Communication on Relocation Plans

“I knew the relationship was over when I got home after another exhausting day at work and both of my kids told me that mum took them to Burger King for lunch and informed them they were relocating to America and Daddy wasn’t going with them.”

Infidelity

“My epiphany came when I told my now-ex-wife, ‘It’s Okay to meet the man that you’ve been visiting on the side.'” I’ll be around in the relationship when you get it off your system and come back. Do what needs to be done. She did not comment; all she did was sort of sigh. When she eventually consented to attend a marriage counselor and he persuaded my ex-wife to tell me she wanted a divorce, that’s when I realized it was over.”

I Was To Do All The Chores

“I took the second shift. She kept saying I was “home all day” and that meant I had to do all the duties, and she meant all the housework. I would arrive at my house after a Friday workday at three in the morning. She would tell me I was lazy and only wanted to sleep when she woke me up at eight in the morning.”

Fathering Another Man’s Child

“After learning that my wife was carrying another man’s child, I vowed to raise her unborn baby as my own. She agreed to start out with. Later, the more I tried, the faster she’d run to the other guy. Then, one day, she was asked by a couple’s therapist: “Do you want to make it work?” No, was her response. I realized at that point that I had exhausted all options for saving the marriage.”

Not Sleeping Together

“I had two breaking points: when she left the main bedroom and when she finally went to the lawyer and requested a legal separation. Although the divorce wasn’t what I intended and it kills me every day of my life, I am confident that things will improve.”

Eating Hot Dogs

On July 4, we were watching fireworks. That particular day, my wife and I had argued over the quantity of hot dogs the boys should be permitted to consume. Less than half in joke, I had added, “Eating hot dogs on the Fourth of July is a birthright of all Americans.”

“Except for nitrites, you have no idea what’s in them,” she had said. “Which results in cancer. It’s a hot dog,” I yelled back. The conflict then turned to condiments. Then, we enjoyed the fireworks. The fireworks were silent at first. Since light travels more quickly than sound, you can see a light before you can hear it. Then it dawned on me that our marriage was going through this; I could just see it blowing up.

I Could Only Talk With the Cat

“I had that thought when she declared that I couldn’t talk to anybody, including family members, waiters/waitresses, bank cashiers, and anyone other humans.” That was crazy. I was only permitted to talk to the cat.

Starved of Happiness

“I was hired by BMW Design to make a film about the process of designing vehicles. When I got to Munich, they handed me a brand-new convertible sports car and told me to drive it around the Alps for a few days before returning it once I felt comfortable driving it. I had this epiphany while racing through the icy Alps, blaring music, roof down, heating fan whirling, ‘I’m happy!’ This is how it feels to be happy.’ A second thought struck me at that point: “If my partner were here, she would tell me to slow down.” Reduce the music. Put back the roof. She would also be grumbling about the stench of cigarette smoke coming from passing vehicles. I became aware at that time that I had forgotten how it felt to be happy and free.”

Unending Fights

“After precisely two years of couples counseling, in which I desperately searched for the means of repairing our broken marriage, I realized that both of us were still having the same arguments. When I finally understood that I would be a better dad without the mother of my children, I realized that the goal of therapy was to give me the confidence to end a toxic relationship.”
