South Korean TV shows are a bit like marmite, you either love them or you hate them. Most of the time, those that delve into the world of Koren TV shows end up hooked, and the quality over the recent years has massively improved. It’s really easy to binge watch these shows, and the shows below are ones that weren’t successes in Korea, but managed to become huge across the world.

Extraordinary You

A rich girl has a heart condition, and it’s believed that she wouldn’t be living any much further than her teens. A heart grippling drama, where a story of a young girl who realises she’s a side character of web manga, is a twisted story with a range of romance scenes. Korean viewers weren’t impressed, but everyone else loved the storyline.

It’s Okay to Not be Okay

Even though this show got low ratings in Korea, it became an instant worldwide success. It concentrates on a psychiatrist and a children’s book author who fell in love and took care of each other, including all of their needs.

Doom at Your Service

After the death of her parents, the woman featured within this drama struggles to find her feet, and is broken. She has a constant work pressure and things that nothing else could go wrong for her, until she is diagnosed with a disease. When she spends time wishing that everything would just go away, Doom shows up to give her a hand.

The King: Eternal Monarch

This drama gained a massive audience because of the love story that has been set within two parallel worlds. There are many complications, but it definitely keeps you hooked. Even though this series boosted in South Korea to begin with, it wasn’t long before the ratings dropped, but this didn’t stop it becoming popular elsewhere.

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Joo

This show now has a very high rating, but at the beginning when it was first released, it wasn’t a fan favourite. It features Lee Sung-kyung, who is a Korean A-lister, and the fans who do enjoy this drama find it full of love, cuteness and humour.

Hwarang

This series was extremely talked about when it was first released and it’s a story of men that had trained to guard the King that was in hiding. The fact it was set in the pre-10th century times which means that you get a bit of an insight into History as well as being gripped by the story line.

Uncontrollably Fond

This drama is about two people who were lovers once upon a time and end up reunited after being apart from each other for years. With the high level of actors and actresses within this drama, the expectations were high. However, it didn’t do very well in South Korea, but it did become the biggest hit in China.

Welcome to Waikiki

This drama has been well rated by those across the globe, except for those who actually live in Korea. It was actually one of the least rated dramas of all time, but everyone else loves it. It is a show that concentrates on three friends who open a guesthouse after becoming business partners. It’s a bit of a comedy drama that will have you in fits of laughter.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo

When you begin watching this K-drama, you would never think that it is one that isn’t a favourite in its home country. However, it wasn’t liked by Koreans at all. It focuses on a girl who travels in time and gets herself involved in politics and love of a traditional era. Something that will keep you gripped the whole way through.

True Beauty

This series is very popular across the world, and it follows a story about a girl who has a huge makeover in order to fit within her school. Even though it is popular around the world, the Korean’s weren’t so enthusiastic about it and it only got a 4% rating. It is a sweet story with a lot of grippling laughter moments for you to enjoy.

Itaewon Class

There is a gentleman who stars within this drama who overcomes the odds no end, and he ends up sympathising with those who seem to be shunned by society. He is a very generous character, and when he opens a cafe, he sets out to hire those who others wouldn’t. It’s a heartwarming storyline that will keep you hooked.

Hyena

A small-time lawyer who has a very questionable way of working, and a high-profile lawyer start off on the wrong foot, but it turns out, they’re actually perfect for each other. These unforgettable characters make the drama Hyena one that you will not want to miss. Koreans weren’t the biggest fans, but it seems that everyone else around the world fell in love with the characters as much as they fell in love with each other.

Kingdom 2

This is the second season of a zombie drama, and it seems that this one hit off better than the first. It involves a prince who is trying to save his country from a zombie invasion, as well as some corruption. This drama keeps you on the edge of your seat and wanting more. We’re all hoping for a third season.

A tech start-up wants to move onto bigger and better things, and beind receiving encouraging letters. The letters lead onto love, and the two create a romance facade that we just can’t turn away from. This is one to watch, definitely!

If you found out that the person you were married to was a serial killer, what would you do? It could be the case for the main character within this drama who is a police detective. There is a story to follow throughout where we’re unsure as to whether it was her husband who was committing the crimes, and if he was, does she have enough love and commitment to want to stay with him despite it all.

If you’re trying to find your way in a highly competitive world as a protagonist, how would you cope? This drama is about a group of likable people who try to find their way in the world and each character is extremely charming. It’s hard not to get gripped into the story.

A lot of Koreans thought this drama was well over the top, and this is why it was rated low. However, it has made a name for itself over the world because of the insightful characters who are infact, superhero police, and the scenes are all full of action. One that you won’t want to miss.

This Korean drama is a comedy that you will definitely fall in love with. It bases its story on an unemployed woman who runs for office, and she is mostly motivated by the larger paycheck.
