We all know that America is a very proud country, and the people within are very passionate about where they live. However, there are some people who aren’t as enthusiastic about the USA, and a lot of them are celebrities. Whether these celebrities have been born into the US system, or they’ve gone to live a “better life”, they really spout their dislike over social media.
Johnny Depp
During an interview in 2003, Depp claimed that America as a country was “dumb” and he was hoping that his two children, Jack, 21 and Lily Rose, 24, would choose to live in France where their mother was born rather than in America. In fact, Depp condemned the US-led war in Iraq during this same interview. Depp said, “America is dumb, it’s like a dumb puppy that has big teeth that can bite and hurt you, aggressive. My daughter is four, my boy is one. I’d like them to see America as a toy, a broken toy. Investigate it a little, check it out, get this feeling and then get out.”
Ariana Grande
We are all aware that there has been some speculation, and even scientific evidence, that there is an issue within America with portion sizes and some individuals being overweight due to this and a lack of exercise. Ariana Grande was called out in 2015 after she had created a fat-shaming video where she was licking two doughnuts and then claiming, “I hate Americans, I hate America”.
Janeane Garofalo
The 59-year-old comedian usually makes the effort to make people laugh, so when Janeane Garofalo came out with something serious about America, it took everyone by surprise. In fact, she doesn’t even like the sight of the USA, and she said, “Our country is founded on a shame: our forefathers were slave-owning rich white guys who wanted it their way. So when I see the American flag, I go, “Oh my God, you’re insulting me.”
Gwyneth Paltrow
When Gwyneth lived in England with her ex-husband Chris Martin for 10 years, she had absolutely no issues with saying exactly what she disliked about America. During an interview in 2004, during her time in England, Gwyneth said, “I worry about bringing up a child in America, at the moment there’s a weird, over-patriotic atmosphere over there, like, ‘We’re number one and the rest of the world doesn’t matter’. I love the English lifestyle, it’s not as capitalistic as America… The British are much more intelligent and civilised than the Americans.”
Madonna
Madonna hasn’t specifically verbalised her opinions on America per se. However, she did write about it and put it into a song. We’re all aware that Madonna is one to stir up controversy, and she will push the boundaries effortlessly. In 2003, the music video “American Life” was released, and during this video, Madonna complains about how shallow the USA is and throws insults at the culture, as well as a few things against the former president George W. Bush.
Kate Hudson
During her time filming in France for the 2003 rom-com, ‘Le Divorce’, Kate Hudson began to dislike anything American. She stated, “Sometimes I’ll be walking down the street and I’ll hear some American and I’ll just go, ‘Of course they hate us. Of course they can’t stand us. We’re the most annoying, boisterous creatures in the world.’ I mean, we come in and we eat mounds of food, and we’re like, ‘Where’s the ketchup for our French fries.’ I’m like, ‘Shut up!’”
Jane Fonda
The 85 year old Barbarella actress has been known as one of the most hated women in America. Jane Fonda was even given the nickname of ‘Hanoi Jane’ after she was pictured on top of a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun. This situation caused outrage, but Jane continued on to accuse soldiers that had been released from North Vietnam prison camps as faking their accounts of cruelty and being liars.
Chris Rock
A lot of us know and love Chris Rock for his hilarious and infectious personality. However, in 2012, he went onto Twitter to deliver a very sarcastic message about his Independence Day. Chris said, “Happy white peoples independence day the slaves weren’t free but I’m sure they enjoyed the fireworks.”
Michelle Obama
You might assume, as Former First Lady, that she loves the American country, especially since her husband, Barack Obama, led it for two terms. Although this isn’t the case, Michelle has previously slated the country by saying, “Sometimes it’s easier to hold on to your own stereotypes and misconceptions. It makes you feel justrified in your own ignorance. That’s America.” However, when her husband won the election, Michelle changed her tone slightly by saying, “For the first time in my adult lifetime, I’m proud of my country.”
Azealia Banks
The rapper, Azealia Banks hasn’t held back on her opinions of America, and has quite openly stated to Playboy, “I hate everything about this country. Like, I hate fat white Americans. All the people who are crunched into the middle of America, the real fat and meat of America, are these racist conservative white people who live on their farms.”
Muhammed Ali
Known as one of the most influential sports people ever, he even put his boxing career in jeopardy due to the fact that he refused to go to war. Muhammed stated, “My conscience won’t let me go shoot my brother, or some dark people, or some hungry people in the mud for big powerful America.” A little bit of a dig at America there, and because of this, Muhammed wasn’t able to compete from March 1967 until October 1970 due to a legal battle that came from him refusing to fight in the war.
Charlie Chaplin
Charlie Chaplin was, and still is, a well known English comic actor, composer and filmmaker. However, Charlie was accused of being a communist because he attacked capitalism and nuclear weapons during his role in the film “Monsieur Verdoux.” During this, Charlie openly spoke out against the Red Scare. After this, Charlie was denied re-entry into America unless he answered questions surrounding his political views. Charlie was so disappointed and put off by his experiences that he didn’t return to America for another 20 years, and the only reason for his return was to receive an honorary Oscar.
Michael Moore
Michael is known as one of the most controversial figures in documentary filmmaking. When the Clint Eastwood film “American Sniper” was released, Michael made a few tweets condemning snipers, saying, “My uncle was killed by sniper in WW2. We were taught snipers were cowards. Will shoot you in the back. Snipers aren’t hereos. And invaders are worse. But if you’re on the roof of your home defending it from invaders who’ve come 7K miles, you are not a sniper, you are brave, you are a neighbour.” There was a lot of backlash towards Michael, with Sean Hannity calling Moore an idiot and saying, “Hey Michael, when snipers like Chris Kyle are saving AMERICAN lives, that would be a good thing. Even an idiot like you can get that.”
Seth Rogen
Comedian and actor, Seth Rogen, has also made comments about ‘American Sniper’, as he made the comparison of that movie and Quentin Tarantino’s Nazi-propaganda film ‘Inglorious B*****ds’. There was quite a bit of backlash, but Seth went on to state that the only reason he compared the two movies was because they both involved plots about the most lethal of snipers.
Colin Kaepernick
The 49ers quarterback caused an uproar by a lot of fans and NFL officials because he refused to stand when the National Anthem was playing. The reason Colin did this was because he wanted to protest the wrongdoings against African-Americans and other minorities within the USA. Colin stated that he wasn’t willing or prepared to “show pride in a flag for a country that oppressed black people and people of color.”
Dixie Chicks
These girls were a loud opponent of the Iraq War and Bush Administration. They ended up facing a huge amount of backlash from American fans when they stated that they were “ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas”. This was during a concert in London in 2003. Due to this, their new album suffered and they were booed during the Academy of Country Music Awards.
Harry Belafonte
The musician was blacklisted by the Red Scare because he was a leading figure within the Civil Rights movement. During this time, he worked closely with Martin Luther King Jr. Harry even discussed the controversial stands against US policy after the era, and this included the opposition to the embargo on Cuba and a supportiveness of Venezuela President Hugo Chavez.
