Ever wonder what it’s like to be rich? Well, here are 13 things that the one-percenters get away with that the poor never would.
Avoiding Taxes
One of the most well-known–and most controversial—facts about the 1% is that they are pros at avoiding taxes. They get away with it because much of their income comes in the form of gains in the value of their stocks and other assets, and they can avoid taxes on those gains if they hold on to their assets rather than sell them. Tax breaks also help.
Acting Above the Law
From drug cartels to international fraud, the rich often get away with illegal activities–specifically blue collar crime. But why do they get away with it? In the case of HSBC, the bank had been funneling billions of dollars to Mexican drug cartels. They ended up basically getting away with it–with only paying a $1.9 billion fine. Why? the shock of confiscating HSBC’s banking license would have destabilized the world economy.
Harming the Environment
One thing that is widely known to not do is anything bad for the environment. We’re supposed to feel guilty for littering. However, some one-percenters are getting away with more than that. Billionaires the Koch brothers have a chemical plant in Crossett, where they’re pumping some nasty stuff into the rivers. These guys have also been held responsible for more than 300 oil spills.
Making Gigantic Purchases
We all know some of the extravagant purchases the rich make–such as yachts and vacation homes. But there are other purchases that the poor don’t even think about–such as landing 747s in small airports–which isn’t exactly legal. But in this case, the rich can afford paying off the fines and do what they want. Some other purchases include luxury ice cubes, and private performances by big name artists.
Extravagant Trips
If you have enough money, you can virtually take vacations anywhere. There are rich people who regularly fly all over the world all the time. The poor could never get away with this–as it would seem too extravagant and not something they could afford.
Paying Other People to Get Things Done
When you’re poor or middle class, you tend to do things yourself. From cleaning your house to managing your own money, it usually all falls on you. But wealthy people have the convenience of paying people to do things for them. The rich generally have a team in place to organize their daily operations. Managers, gardeners, assistants, and private chefs are some examples of the things they pay others to do.
Access to Healthier Foods
Healthier foods are more expensive, but the rich often have access to foods that aren’t available to the rest of the population. Major cities often have companies specifically for this. These companies literally serve the highest quality food to the wealthy, and they include a variety of serving methods, including meal prep services. Much of the wealthy also pay private chefs to cook such foods in the diet of their choice.
Fitness
It’s considered a good thing to try and stay in shape–even for the poor. They may be encouraged to go to the gym or to walk or run outside. Some may purchase some home equipment. But it’s considered a luxury. The wealthy have access to just about any fitness option–inlcuding private gyms and major celebrity personal trainers.
Education
It’s not just private schools that the wealthy have access to. As adults, they can connect with tons of people to help them learn and increase self development. From mentors to elite life coaches, when the wealthy have issues they seek help from some of the top-tier companies and people in the industries.
Emergency Management
When there’s a natural disaster or a riot going on, most of us can’t get very far very quickly. And the poor don’t plan ahead much for such events. The wealthy are a different story, When there’s political unrest, or a tornado coming, the wealthy have the ability to simply leave. They may have private transportation in place. Money isn’t a restriction, so they can pay to get out quickly.
Access to Top Legal Teams
Whatever the issue, the wealthy can afford top legal teams to help resolve it. Having such help can get things done faster, and help create the best outcome possible. On top of it all, the wealthy can often afford to pay off fines that come their way during the case–which can help things move along even more smoothly.
Access to the Best Healthcare
Most of the poor and middle class have basic access to healthcare, have health insurance, and rely on what their insurance covers. For the wealthy, money is no object. They can simply pay the best doctors out of pocket for their needs, and often afford the best doctors in the world. They can also afford cosmetic surgeries.
Funding Your Hobbies
The poor don’t have much room for funding their hobbies. Many look for deals, or do it on their own the best they can. Some hobbies they can’t afford at all. But the wealthy can fund them as much as they want–and pay some of the best quality resources. Take music for example. If someone wanted to learn the piano, you might try to take piano lessons if you’re poor. But the wealthy can afford some of the top teachers.
